Larson Binkley Wins CSI Award - June 2007

The Kansas City Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) has recognized Larson Binkley, Inc. with the 2007 Excellence in Engineering award for their work on the Embarq Prototype Retail Store. The 3,000 square foot store features a highly technical and interactive environment.  All mechanical, electrical and communication engineered systems were designed to support the electronic equipment within the store while meeting energy codes as well as the aesthetic intent of the store designers.  The repeatability, constructability and cost of the engineered systems were major design considerations.

Larson Binkley, Inc. has provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for 15 Embarq stores around the U.S. Embarq is a high tech communications company offering voice, data, high speed internet, wireless and entertainment services.

 

Larson Binkley Becomes Approved Continuing Education Provider - May 2007

Larson Binkley, Inc. has achieved status as an AIA/CES Registered Provider for continuing education. Larson Binkley Leads Lighting Session at Commercial Construction Expo - May 2007

Larson Binkley, Inc. engineers led a "back to basics" engineering seminar on lighting and electrical issues in the retail industry at the recent Commercial Construction Expo in Chicago.  The seminar covered the latest information on codes, requirements and technology advances involved in the design, construction and operations of retail outlets. In addition to Chris Larson and Jim Megerson from Larson Binkley, the panelists included Brenn Randle of Limited Brands, Sean O'Connor of Sean O'Connor Associates, and Sam Newberry of Amerlux Lighting Solutions.

 

Larson Binkley Engineers Speak at Sustainable Design Workshop - May 2007

Engineers from Larson Binkley, Inc. participated as leaders in a workshop on sustainable design for architects and engineers on May 23, 2007, in Overland Park, Kansas.  The workshop addressed new advances in HVAC systems, the cost benefits of green buildings, the commissioning process, and design strategies for daylighting.  In addition, representatives from the Blue Valley School District in Overland Park, KS discussed their experience in implementing sustainable design practices in their school district.

 

Healthy Schools Workshop Features Larson Binkley, Inc. - May 2007

Engineers from Larson Binkley, Inc. participated in a presentation and panel discussion on indoor air quality and energy efficiency at the Healthy Schools Workshop on April 30, 2007, at The Discovery Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Entitled "Improving the Learning Environment: Conditioning the Space," the session included topics such as displacement air technology, options for increasing energy conservation and improving air quality, and commissioning existing HVAC systems.

The workshop was held in recognition of National Healthy Schools Day and was attended by school officials in Kansas and Missouri. Sponsors included the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Larson Binkley, Inc., NSP Architecture, Henderson Engineers, HTK Architects, Children's Mercy Hospital and Blue Valley School District.

 

Larson Binkley Client Wins Retail Store Design Award - March 2007

Embarq Corporation recently won a first place award for store design in Chain Store Age's annual retail design competition. The judges liked the "bold and angular" fixtures, steel sculptures, and white and green lighting schemes in the 3,000 square foot store. Larson Binkley, Inc. has provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for 15 Embarq stores around the U.S. Embarq is a high tech communications company offering voice, data, high speed internet, wireless and entertainment services. The store's design can be seen in the February 2007 issue of Chain Store Age magazine.

 

Larson Binkley now registered in 50 states - March 2007

Larson Binkley, Inc., has recently achieved professional engineering registration in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The last state registration to be earned was Alaska which required our engineers to complete a course in arctic engineering. Reaching this milestone will allow us to assist our clients anywhere they build in the United States.  

 

Larson Binkley promotes six - January 2007

Larson Binkley, Inc., a mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering firm located in Overland Park, Kansas, is proud to announce two key management promotions and four new shareholders.

Robert Harris, PE, and Wael Sammur, PE, have been named Associate Vice Presidents.

Harris is a registered mechanical engineer and has been with the firm since 1993. He is a specialist in managing the design of building systems for large store retailers and oversees all of Larson Binkley's projects for Kohl's department stores.  He has a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering from Kansas State University and a Master of Science degree in engineering management from the University of Kansas.

Sammur is a registered mechanical engineer who manages many of Larson Binkley, Inc.'s hospitality and entertainment projects. His responsibilities will now include overseeing the firm's project management process and performance. Sammur has been with the firm since 1993 and has a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

Named as new shareholders are Tim Danner, Scott Jensen, William Price, and Jon Scantlin.

Danner is a registered electrical engineer and has been with Larson Binkley since 2000. He has been instrumental in the in-house development of drawing production process software that involves several automated features that help streamline the firm's design process. Danner has a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering and helps oversee the firm's technology development efforts.

Jensen is a registered electrical engineer and assists in managing Larson Binkley's electrical engineering department. Jensen has a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering from the University of Kansas and has been with Larson Binkley since 2003.

Price is a registered mechanical engineer and has managed the engineering design for several high performance buildings including data centers and call centers. His new additional responsibilities include assisting in overseeing the firm's project management process. Price has a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri and has been with the firm since 1997.

Scantlin is a registered mechanical engineer and assists in managing the mechanical department. He has a broad base of experience in several project types and building systems. Scantlin has a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering from Kansas State University and has been with Larson Binkley since 2000.

 

Larson Binkley project wins national ASHRAE technology award - January 2007

The major mechanical renovation of Blue Valley North High School has been honored by ASHRAE with a national TEGA (Technology) award. TEGA awards are given for outstanding achievement in the application of heating, refrigerating and air-conditioning technology. The project was judged on energy efficiency, indoor air quality, thermal comfort, innovation, operations and maintenance, cost effectiveness, and environmental impact. The project also won ASHRAE awards at the chapter and regional levels.

 

Larson Binkley project achieves LEED® Gold rating - January 2007

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL) Call Center in Springfield, Oregon, has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as successfully meeting the standards required for LEED® Gold certification. Larson Binkley, Inc. is the engineer-of-record for the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems on the 163,000 SF call center.

This project utilizes a bio-diesel fuel generator for disaster recovery/utility back-up in order to comply with the state’s low emission requirements. State-of-the-art HVAC technologies are used such as under-floor air conditioning, displacement ventilation, and CO2 demand ventilation control. The overall modeled efficiency of the HVAC system exceeds ASHRAE 90.1 by nearly 40%. Also part of the project is a high efficiency condensing boiler plant with a low temperature reset schedule. The chilled water plant employs a primary/secondary decoupled pumping system and variable speed drive chillers. Modular power and data wiring are additional sustainable design strategies along with indirect lighting and daylighting.
